Lu Yu Tea Liqueur
Gorilla were introducing something a little different – a tea-infused cream liqueur named after Lu Yu, the revered Chinese tea master known as the Sage of Tea. They came to us with a brief to design a bottle that felt as unique as the drink inside it.
We wanted a balance between tradition and modernity, something that captured the spirit of East-meets-West through refined form and considered detail.
We chose a matte porcelain-white finish – reminiscent of fine ceramic – which gives the bottle an elegant, tactile quality, instantly setting it apart on the shelf.
The intricate illustration, which was printed directly onto the bottle, references classical Chinese landscape painting and historic tea culture evoking a sense of storytelling and craft, and connecting the liqueur to the heritage of tea.
The typography is minimal and refined. The circular, monogram above the name (which translates as ‘luck’) draws on traditional Chinese calligraphic symbols but was simplified for a modern identity.
The wooden cap completes the look, grounding the design with a natural, tactile material that balances the bottle’s clean, ceramic feel.
The end result is a bottle that is clean, cultured and quietly distinctive, and the liqueur is delicious.
